ABSTRACT
The digital image is currently widely used in various fields. Starting from
everyday needs such as photo printing, forest mapping, forensic identification,
medical records to satellite imagery. Almost all digital images require a large
amount of storage media. So this creates a problem if the image is stored in the
storage that has limited storage size. By using the overlapped fractal method with
various range of block sizes, it is expected that the results of this study can be
used as a reference to understand the concept of the method used and solve the
problem of storage media limitations. The data used in this study are RGB images
in JPG format. The compression process is divided into several stages, the first
stage is determining the size of the range block and determining the value of the
shift. The shifting technique used in this study is overlapped. The next stage is the
phase of building fractals, in this section each range block is processed to get a
new image. The range block that has been processed is then reconstructed to
become a new image which is the result of compression. The compressed image is
then compared to the original image. Comparisons in this study include file size
(size), compression ratio, the value of Mean square Error (MSE), and Peak Signal
to Noise Ratio (PSNR).
