    ABSTRACT
    Differential is one part of the powertrain system that has a function to transmit power to final drive and allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds. This differential not only allows the two steering wheels to rotate at different speeds, but also balances the torque between them. The purpose of this study is to identify damage to the differential. The research method used in this study is a descriptive method (Self - Report Research), this research was carried out using direct observation techniques. To keep the performance of the differential always in good condition, it is possible to understand the standard of periodic maintenance in accordance with the Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) so that the differential components are not easily damaged. Damage that occurs in the differential is due to the lack of differential lubricant when the unit is operated, the lack of lubricant in the differential system causes the parts in the differential to experience high friction and the distance between the ring gear and drive pinion (backlash) becomes large. In this differential, it was found that abrasive wear on the side gear and contact stress fatigue on the ring gear and spider gear caused damage to the differential gear in the form of scratch and even brittle fracture.
