    ABSTRACT
    The development of industry in the world is running very rapidly, one of which is the transportation industry. The development of the transportation industry has led to an increase in the quantity and quality of gasoline used. In some developed countries, the use of TEL has begun to be replaced by MTBE. With the use of MTBE in gasoline, it can reduce air pollution because mixing it with gasoline produces complete combustion. So far, most of the needs for MTBE in Indonesia are imported from countries such as America, Germany, Korea, and China. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an MTBE factory in Indonesia to meet domestic needs, reduce dependence on imports, and if possible can be exported to increase the country's foreign exchange. By taking into account several aspects including aspects of supplying raw materials, transportation, labor, marketing and utilities, a strategic location for the factory was chosen in the Bontang area, East Kalimantan. The factory is planned under the management of a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a total of 405 employees led by a president director. The raw material used is 99.85% methanol obtained from PT. Kaltim Methanol Industry while isobutylene is obtained from BASF-YPC, China. The process of making MTBE is carried out by the methanol etherification method with isobutylene derived from the refinery process using Amberlyst-15 catalyst in a fixed bed multitube reactor, the reaction takes place in the liquid phase exothermicly at a temperature of 75 and a pressure of 10.8 atm. Reactor output products enter the distillation tower to separate MTBE from the rest of the reactants in the form of methanol and mix-Ccomponents4 which are by-products and residues of the reaction. This plant produces MTBE with a purity of 98% by mass. Based on the results of the economic evaluation of this factory, the percentage of Break Event Point (BEP) is 42.9%, Shut Down Point (SDP) is 39.53% and Discounted Cash Flow Rate (DCF) is 67.4% Pay Out Time (POT). ) after tax of 2.35 years Pay Out Tima before tax 1.8 years. From this economic review, it can be concluded that an MTBE plant with a capacity of 150,000 tons/year is feasible to build.
